I’d like to discus the chapter from the book and summarize its content in this paper. We live in highly technological century now, but we should think about our roots and remember it. The main point of this paper is to draw attention on modern problems of our society and to make it through the chapter of the book Naked City, The Death and Life of Authentic Urban Places written by Sharon Zukin.
First of all I want to mention that analyzed part of reading has provocative character and it compares two kinds of life. One kind of life is presented as corporate city and other way of life is urban villages with people who like nature and want to create something by own forces. Two communities try to live in one territory (I mean not geographical position, but in figurative sense one period of life). There are interesting descriptions of nature and people’s struggle for possibility not to be like all population and live in stone jungles, but be closer to the nature and proclaim healthy way of life, healthy food and social relations. Two sides of our society are presented in the reading. On one side, electronic signs, modern technologies, giant billboards dramatize the corporate city’s life and fast possessing, but on the other side we see natural life, fresh air and nation soul. Yes, it is right word “soul”, because exactly all new technologies and their implementation in life destroy city’s soul and make people another. Many citizens of big cities are looking only for possibility to exist, but not to live and they forget about their roots, about the way of life of their ancestors and how to be happy.
In my opinion author use understandable language in own book and that’s why it was easy to analyze it. I think that we should be closer to nature and put on the first place relations among people, nature, and also remember that people with their great wish are able to create, but not to destroy. In spite of all we should take care of our traditions, culture and historical roots. It is necessary to protect people who try to change situation and allow them to do it in their own way, because it is so easy to loose not only city’s soul, but also loose people’s or maybe it will be better to say nation’s soul.
