After the separation of the East Christian Church from the West, thus forming Orthodox and Christian religious branches, distinctive dissimilarities were established.
Speaking about the most significant difference, it is probably the general understanding of the Holy Spirit that from the one side seems to be not so weighty and substantial, though it appeared to be influential in the history of Christianity as this difference conduced and is partly responsible for separation of the Church into Orthodox and Catholic branches. The essence of the difference lies in the belief if the Holy Spirit comes from the Father and the Son or only from the Father. This argument was called the Filioque Controversy. Another significant difference is a view on the sin, salvation, and grace. In the Eastern Orthodox Church human is created in the image of God and left to take part in the divine existence. So humans are totally joined, consolidated and unified with God, as Adam and Eve were, and this was called the communion with God. In the Western Churches humans are not created in the image of God but separately from Him though are given freedom to make own choices. In the case of the sin, Eastern Orthodoxy the image of God was blurred establishing a boundary, a wall between God and a man, but due to God’s grace, a salvation is still achieved by people after death and humans again unite with the Father. In Catholicism sin, grace and salvation are treated as it were lawfully. That is the sin can be forgiven by God as the result of a comeuppance.
Different views on the sin, salvation and grace do create opposite perspectives on human life. The way sins and salvation are treated influence the way to live one’s life as it is important if sinning is forgiven and union with God happens after the death or is sinning is forgiven during the lifetime through punishment.
It is worthy of note the general perspective of two branches of Christianity, the Eastern Orthodox tends to be more mystical, philosophical, generalized, non-concrete and conceptual and the Western one is more structuralized by laws and rules.
