Nowadays the problem of negotiations takes on a relatively independent value and people use it in the decision making process. For instance, Juwan Howard in 1994 was drafted into the National Basketball Association. Howard worked really hard and he was almost the highest paid basketball player in 1996 and also 1997 seasons, but one day his contract was voided by the NBA. Negotiations problems appeared when situations change and NBA ruling was waiting for challenges. Analyzing “Power Play for Howard” we can mention that in it were involved several parties.
Summarizing “Power Play for Howard” we should mention that two teams offered to one player good money for the contract, but player know own significance for both teams and that’s why he was looking for the best salary. As a result of such searching he signed a $101 million very profitable contract with the Miami Heat and his salary had wonderful perspectives. But this contract was voided by the NBA because the Heat for that moment exceeded its salary cap. Howard needed contract and he returned to another team the Bullets where he signed a seven-year contract on something about $105 million. The Heat was disappointed by such decision and they went to court with an aim to challenge the NBA’s ruling.
Agents greatly influenced on sportsmen and that’s why they are looking for better salaries and new contracts, but it can have not good results, because “love” to games shouldn’t be sell for many. Discussing Howard’s perspective we understood that he in the negotiation of the contract wanted to earn more money and to find good job for the next seven seasons. Howard wanted to achieve necessary salary for his efforts and in my opinion his tangible benefits from the negotiation can be described as a great wish to achieve the financial gain. Saying about Howard’s costs we see among them sport efforts and time that he would put in hard training and games. The ego boost is considered the intangible benefit and a price for the contract is a good confirmation for this. The risk also has a place because Howard could play for losing team, receive low salary or weak coach, or even appeared in undesirable city. Managers of both teams could receive for their teams’ possibility to become success commands with Howard’s help. Howard and his agent were in “win-win” situation and should choose the best variant for good player.
For the conclusion I want to say that good negotiation’s skills are necessary for every person today, because for Howard destiny they help to choose good team and earn big sum of money and good job for a long period of time. In my opinion “win-win” position is the best variant for negotiation process and Howard choose it for own profit.
