Discussions 1. Seurat, Cezanne, Gauguin, and van Gogh are outstanding painters, whose unique styles distinguished them from the rest of painters. At the same time, each artist found his own way in the art to create his own, original style. Seurat developed the style, which marked his shift toward Neo-impressionism, which became the new trend in the visual art. His “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” was the manifestation of his neo-impressionist style, where he managed to convey not only his personal emotions but mirror different social classes. Cezanne gave rise to Post-impressionist and created his original style due to extensive use of colors, repetitive and sensitive brushstrokes, which emphasized the composition and design of the painting. Gauguin moved from Synthetist style toward Primitivism. His works are intentionally simple often include pastoral elements and some elements of cloisonnist style. Van Gogh is, to a certain extent, similar to Cezanne in his post-impressionist style and follower of Seurat. His works include bright and intensive colors combined with a profound interest to portraits, including self-portrait.

2. Giacometti’s “The Invisible Object” and Magritte’s “The Empire of Lights” mirror the anxiety of artists in regard to the upcoming World War I. Giacometti’s “The Invisible Object” depicts the knees half bent girl, which mirrors the hidden fear of the artist in face of an invisible threat. The girl seems to be kneeling under the impact of this invisible threat, which was apparently a haunt of World War I. Similarly, Magritte’s “The Empire of Lights” depicts the house which fades almost away in the darkness, which may symbolize World War I, with the bright light which attempts to resist to the darkness of the war.
