The aim of this essay is to discuss four major sociological theories: theory of rational choice, structural functionalism, symbolic interaction and conflict theory. The concepts and assumptions of these four theories will be used to consider current event article and regard it from different social perspectives.
1. Description of the article
For the analysis, I have chosen the article devoted to recent health bill signed by President Barack Obama. This bill is suggested to be “the most far-reaching health legislation since the creation of the Medicare and Medicaid programs” (Galewitz, 2010). The health care package will undergo significant changes that will affect virtually the life of every citizen. According to the bill, all Americans will be obliged to have health insurance or pay a penalty. For those who cannot afford health insurance programs such as Medicaid and government subsidies will be available. There will be a certain scale of payments, and those who have problems with health will probably have to pay less – insurers will not be allowed to charge maximal fees from sick people. Single citizens up to 26 years old could stay on their parents’ insurance. Also, Medicare program is going to be substantially improved.
Higher taxes and fees will be partly compensated by tax excise for health coverage; the gap with premiums is not clear yet but there will be certain limitations on charges judging on the social, medical and economic position of an individual.
