Values are a very important element in social practice. They help understanding the theoretical base of profession and can be very useful in practical implementation. In this essay the classification of social worker’s professional values will be implemented to study case.
Case of adoption
To analyze the application of classification to the perceived social worker and the client’s role and activities, it has to be briefly explained. The values in social work are classified in three ways 1) As preferred conceptions of people, 2) As preferred outcomes for people, and 3) As preferred instrumentalities for dealing with people.
Preferred conceptions of people include individual feelings, needs and capacities: need to belong, capacity to constructive change, belief in worth and dignity, and so on.
Preferred outcomes for people are the values like a belief in capacity and willing of society to provide equal opportunities and resources for individual needs of every individual.
Preferred instrumentalities for dealing with people related to belief that people have to be recognized as unique individuals and treated with respect and dignity.
The actions of young mother, which allows her sister to adopt her children, are related to the second point of classification. The adaptation by mature and financially secure relative is the opportunity of individual growth and development for young mother.
The decision of her sister to adopt twins relates to the first point of classification because it demonstrates the mutual responsibility for children of young unmarried and financially unsecured mother.
At last, social worker has to assist this family, and in particular, address to the third point of classification and explain the parents of young mother that she should have the right to self determination.
