In situations, when the possibility of unilateral actions of the conflicting parties is practically exhausted or the price of continuing conflict becomes too high, the opponents have a chance to resolve the issue through negotiations with the attraction of a neutral third party. Models of mediation include: facilitatorship, consulting mediation, and mediation with the elements of arbitration.

In mediation with elements of arbitration, mediator’s influence is maximal. The parties agree that if negotiations get deadlocked, the mediator will make a binding decision on contentious issue. This encourages conflicting parties interested in the control over results to make maximum efforts for the independent search for solutions (Lewicki, 2009). In any case, this procedure ensures that the agreement between the parties will be finally reached.
However, in cases when the situation gets out of control and there exists a need for a quick, decisive action, a method of power can be applied by means of: imposition of strategies beneficial for a stronger side; use of competition; use of power by means of coercion to obtain unambiguous results; demand of obedience (Melbourn, 2008).
