Furthermore, improvements for workers are not really efficient and often occur under the pressure of local authorities and public. Wal-Mart would never change its policies in relation to employees if there was no pressure from the part of the public and local authorities. Moreover, do you really believe that if 50% of employees are still uninsured, than Wal-Mart conducts a socially responsible policy. If other retailers have smaller share of insured employees, than they do conduct socially irresponsible policies too and Wal-Mart is just a bit better than the worst retailers. Finally, new jobs at Wal-Mart mean job cuts at smaller retailers. Hence, what is the positive impact of Wal-Mart on local economy or labor market? I think there is none.
