Web archeology is a great program, that is provided online, and allows organizations to build and preserve their own web archive of all the information about the site.
This archive has information for over 125 partners: state archives, university libraries, federal institutions, state libraries, museums, historians, and independent researchers.
With a “way-back machine” – a device that displayed the Web as it looked on a given date – everyone has a window on the past.
The Internet Archive allows a broad range of users to analyze the Web in ways that have never been possible before: This method of research can be called unique as it does not require special tools, techniques, methods and knowledge.
I have made a research about my favorite and most-visited website: www.facebook.com. So this site was first launched as a high school version in September 2005. Later employees of several new companies (Apple Inc., Microsoft and some other) also got rights of membership. And soon, from September 2006 Facebook is opened for everyone who is from 13 years old and has an e-mail address.
So in this site users can create profiles that contains: personal data, different photos, lists of personal interests, address and telephone number, place of living, and other information. Users have own profile pages with number of features, with which users may interact: the Wall, Photos, Friends, Pokes.
Over time, Facebook has added features to its website. For example On September 2006 a “News Feed” – it highlights information about profile changes, new events, birthdays of friends and so on, that is very convenient. Also, the site often expand the information available, for example during the first years users could have only 60 photos in album, but from May 2009, this limit was increased to 200 photos.
Another tool “Facebook Notes” appeared on August 2006, and from February 2007 users can launch “Gifts”, that allows to send virtual gifts to friends.
On July 2008 Facebook introduced “Facebook Beta” – a large redesign of user interface, so new version was put into use in September 2008. And from June 2009 Facebook site introduced a “Usernames” feature, that makes it more convenient to use, because pages can be linked with simpler URLs.
So a “way-back machine” helps to analyze milestones and changes in the site’s history, compare it’s content, style, and characteristics over time.
