The Internet plays a significant role in our daily lives. It changes our life style, the way we do business and also the way our education goes.
Benefits of using internet for business
The development of e-business
In my opinion, the most innovative change that the internet has made to business was the appearance of the web commerce.
The internet substantially reduces transaction costs; it also reduces barriers for companies to entry a market. The distribution in the e-business is based on information offerings. “The internet crosses traditional departmental, industry, and national boundaries, broadening markets and increasing competition.” (Katz & Oblinger, 2000)
It should be said that applying existing business models to e-business environment may be risky, because web commerce changes “goals, companies’ structures, funding, technology, and cooperation.” (Katz & Oblinger, 2000)
Advertising and sharing information with the clients
The internet is a very effective business tool, because it creates huge opportunities to reach the global audience and it’s also very cost-efficient for businesses to use. It’s a perfect tool for advertising as it allows consumers to view products with all the details they need and makes the purchase from home possible.
Companies could initiate an online discussion of their products and to get a quick feedback from their customers. They could also use the internet to involve audiences into the interaction with their brand.
Opportunities of self-employment and freelance
There are a hundreds of online self-employment opportunities, for instance: network marketing, work at home data entry jobs, paid survey opportunities, and others.
Any person could become a freelancer. The internet provides the great opportunities for the companies to do the online outsourcing and this way it opens many opportunities for freelancers for employment. Nowadays freelancers could get their tasks from all around the globe. Therefore, I can say that Internet opens new professional horizons for freelancers.
Some freelance professionals create a new lifestyle: they move from one country to another searching for employment as well as for the new life experience. The major communication tool for them is the Internet which plays a significant role in their lives.
Benefits of using internet for education
The processes of education, teaching and scholarly research were substantially influenced by the new evolving information technologies.
“Digital information and resources have permeated scholarship in so many different ways that often we struggle to clearly identify the impact and articulate the implications”. (Thomas, 2002)
For example, “libraries as have come to rely increasingly on digital information both as supplements to and parallels of print materials. Libraries also are encountering new resources that are “born digital” and have no print or analog equivalent-they exist only in digital form.” (Thomas, 2002)
Students now may have an easy online access to the newspaper, magazine, and serial databases. The relative ease with which digital resources now can be created also means that ”our ability to create, amass and store digital materials far exceeds our current capacity to preserve even that small amount with continuing value.” (Thomas, 2002)
Among the major benefits of the internet for education system I could name the following:
Communication between the organizations and within one organization (for instance, between a professor and a student) became much quicker;
Opportunities of sharing the knowledge and instant access to information. Internet provides an access to various electronic sources of information and it helps both a research and a study;
Erasing of the cultural differences: the information technologies help to the researchers and students from different cultures to exchange their views and ideas.
Problems and disadvantages of the internet for business and education
The major problem is a security of information. Nowadays information may spread around the Globe in a few minutes and that could be some negative information that is able to harm company’s reputation. It means that any organization should pay special attention to the security of information and also to this organization’s image in the eyes of the internet users (their customers and partners).
I should also mention the viruses that attack computer systems. It can damage the business and stop the work process of the whole company, so business has to be careful with this issue and use modern IT techniques and software in order to prevent this.

Problems and disadvantages of the internet for education
As for the education, the major problem is the use of the internet for cheating and plagiarism purposes. It has significantly increased in the recent years. Unfortunately, students and pupils often share their lab work results and homework assignments by e-mail.
I could also name the lack of privacy and security of information. For instance, exclusive scientific ideas or studies may become available to general public by an accident.
The issue of commercialization of the internet and the implications for education is important; therefore it needs to be researched carefully.
There is also the issue of the search engine industry. Hits are commercially funded on many search engines. Companies can buy the highest spots on the returned search list. It’s important to discuss the importance of search engine integrity, especially within the context of its use by students and children.
“Influenced by flashy, appealing design elements, students play into advertisers’ dreams. They determine webpage credibility by the most eye-catching design, not by their content. They overlook credible, but plainly designed sites such as the internet libraries” (Atwood, 2006)
Therefore, students are adopting a consumer, rather than an intellectual, mindset in their approach to information. Organizing web content is the next educational challenge.
