Thoreau makes frequent references to mythology (e.g., in “Economy,” “The Pond in Winter,” and “Sounds”). What do you think the point is of all these mythological references? Is Thoreau trying to tell us something about God?
Thoreau slips toward mythology to refer to the higher authority of God or the authority of a supernatural power. He uses superstitions of people to make his writings persuading and to convey his ideas clearly. What is meant here is the fact that the use of mythological references attracts the attention of the audience to his writing and makes his message clearer because it is easier for readers to understand the message of the author which is grounded on the association with a myth. Mythological references are comprehensible to the audience and Thoreau uses them to explain complex terms, for instance, economic terms, which, being presented properly from the scientific point of view, will incomprehensible for average readers.

In fact, we do need to spend some time in contemplation. In this regard, Thoreau is right because people need contemplation. When they spend time thinking over their deeds, words, and their future as well as over their social environment, they can better understand themselves and the world they are living in. I, in person, do need to spent time and to reconsider carefully everything that has happened to me recently to understand whether I am doing right and what I have to change in my life.
