Today, nursing – is an independent science and independent profession, and is consistently among the top three most respected jobs. But all, without exception, medical professionals must possess knowledge and skills to care for the sick.
At the clinics, the U.S., Canada and Western Europe, nurses are not just helping the doctors but take an active part in treatment and rehabilitation, preventive measures and examination of patients, independently working in emergency rooms, diagnostic rooms.
Previously the nurse was considered as doctor’s assistant, but now it is a specialist, performing clearly defined functions of nursing the patients. The effectiveness of general practitioners in many respects depends on the skill and the proper organization of nurses, from their lightness and human qualities – honesty, accuracy, warmth.
At the beginning, when the institute for nurses was just created, they were called “the sisters of mercy” because did not only care about the body but also about the soul of the patients. So the nurse should be ready for empathy, should show kindness, compassion, involvement. But Nurses can work at homes of nursing care, in which professional nurses monitored and provided comprehensive care to the elderly, the chronically ill and disabled, not requiring intensive therapeutic activities and medical interventions.
Today the nurses must know the basics of psychology and pedagogy, the nuances of growth and development, aspects of nursing ethics and deontology (moral rules and norms of interaction with doctors and patients), history of nursing and medical deontology of scientific work. Also, nurses should be able to conduct surveys and determine the health status of patients, considering the role and functions of the profession in geriatrics (the science of the problems of medical care for older people), family medicine. A special place is given to clinical and civilian nursing, mental health, nursing process.
In general, for each of us and society in general are very important professionals who are responsible for our lives – doctors and nurses.
As for me, I have worked as a nursing assistant for 5 year now and I have a lot of experience. I have worked in nursing homes, assisted living and finally in the hospitals. I have a lot of experience in med-surgery. I have an experience of work with the severely ill people, my special attention as a nurse to the serious and terminally ill. We should search for ways to soothe the last days and hours for such patients and their relatives, and this is the profession of nurses. I know what value for patients has the presence of nursing care, and how important are physical contact and human interaction between patient and nurse.
Though I know that today many nurses are working for international organizations and communities, by helping the sick and the injured, working in homes of care, homes for sick children and the elderly people. Nurses are always ready to provide a necessary and important support, help and care throughout the world, so I believe I can go and help the people of Africa, especially the country I come from Zambia. Because I believe I can be good nurse and help a lot of people, and I believe in the importance of the nursing profession.
