Essays on Communication Theory

Berry (2007) indicates that females and males do not understand each other in the same way, because females tend to be more emotional, to talk much more than males and this communication activity helps females to interact with patients and their family members in more confident, open and effective atmosphere.

My organization is embodied the dominant medical discourse, and nurses have a possibility to talk to the patients and their families more often (and often better) than doctors do it. The main problem of my organization is a very cold tone of doctors when they told bad news to their patients, and in such situation exactly nurses have to ‘pick up the pieces’ when doctors told the family bad news too cold and formal. Female nurses try to built special relationships with patients, they try to learn new details about the patient and these essential details help the provision of holistic care – to work with a person, not the disease. It leads to the fact that very often nurses are transforming the ‘medical opinion’, they see a suffering human in a patient, the human who tries to overcome pain and realizes own humaneness in this act. As a result, nurses, showing empathy and compassion, return humanistic dimension to medical professional perceptions, they make patients not a kind of broken mechanism but people with own feelings, sufferings and desires.

It seems to me that our team needs an implementation of new kind of relationships, where all healthcare professionals will have equal rights and opportunities to express own opinion; and the problem is much more not in gender or cultural differences but in very formal and not confident relations between the members of our team. It is necessary to implement meetings which help to built new confident relations between co-workers, managers and caregivers, because it is important to teach people to communicate in a proper way that create normal relationships and reduce the impact of discourses of power, too often dominate the health care system.

It is necessary to add that individual norms of communicative behavior reflects the individual culture and communicative experience of the individual and are personal and situational refraction of general cultural norms of communication in the language of personality. Walshe & Smith (2006) stated that the fact is that exchange of information between employees in the organization leads to the achievement of goals, and it is necessary to force employees be more tolerant to each other that will help to improve the work of the whole team.

To summarize, it is possible to note that communication process is complex in its nature, and includes in itself different methods which help to send the message to its recipient in appropriate form. To ensure clear and effective communication in any organization, it is important to know and to prevent possible interference in the implementation of communication. In conclusion, we have observed problems within my organizations and have recommended some ways to improve them.
