As it was mentioned in my previous reports emotional intelligent leadership was chosen as a core method in decision making process for resolution of Kava situation. It would be necessary to explain what is emotional intelligence and how it could help to the situation occurred in Kava to get solved.
First systematic studies relating to emotional intelligence are traditionally dating back to the 90-s of the 20th century. The meaning of the term relates to the article by J. F. Mayer and P. Salovey: “Emotional intelligence refers to an ability to recognize the meanings of emotion and their relationships, and to reason and problem-solve on the basis of them. Emotional intelligence is involved in the capacity to perceive emotions, assimilate emotion-related feelings, understand the information of those emotions, and manage them” (Mayer, Salovey; 1999). Both authors were intended to study the subject and provided revolutionary ideas that helped to understand psychological phenomenon of emotional intelligence and it relation to contemporary business, leadership in particular.
The necessity of understanding emotional intelligence within the leadership is quite a contradictory question as actually does not fit to the classical (autocratic) model of leadership that was actually developed through history It does not fit for the present day realities: “Associated with great figures of military history and conjure up charismatic and sometimes despotic images. However, people often use the same language for leadership today – bold, brave and tough with a strong sense of purpose and resolve” (Childs, 2004).
Still there could be outlined several factors explaining why contemporary leadership needs emotional intelligence:
Today’s workforce does not accept the autocratic style often adopted by leaders following historical models of leadership.
leadership has had to evolve to match a growing sense of democracy and independence in the workforce
employees now have far more options and choices than the foot soldiers of yesterday (Childs, 2004).
Dealing with contemporary needs of leadership, there should be mentioned such thing as empowerment, which becomes more and more significant in the present day business. Contemporary leader should understand the necessity of democratization within his company going far beyond the demanding style of the past. In the present day leadership the stress is made on counseling, co-operation and democratic style. The following list would give some the new demands to contemporary leader:
consultation and involvement – but leaders still get criticized for not having and communicating a compelling vision and purpose
autonomy and freedom – but leaders are still expected to take full responsibility when things go wrong
opportunities for growth, challenge and glory – but leaders must be on hand to coach and mentor us so that we develop our potential
inclusion and team spirit – but we still want our leaders to give us individual recognition and acknowledgement (Childs, 2004).
We see that contemporary demands for the leaders are very high, the same time the significance of the emotional intelligence is obvious. Some refer to the emotional intelligence as “serving leadership”, but I can’t agree with this statement. The old-fashioned strategies built around one particular person (or a small group of people) should be left in the past. The following steps and ideas aimed on improving the situation would perfectly illustrate, why emotional intelligent leadership is the one and only decision making strategy that would work in Kava.
The emotional intelligence is very important for Kava. As we came to conclusion that we need to create collaborative team, including island government forces and local companies and/or representatives, than we have to build an active team and establish a foundation, which would help to develop effective measures, to struggle with the natural disaster and possible pandemic situation. It won’t be a secret that the participation of every company and every governmental institution would be really important for the effective struggles, as overcoming the after effects of the natural catastrophes require significant expenses. That is why emotional intelligent leadership would be really good solution, as strong and caring leader could create effective and highly successful team, which could solve all the problems, which now occur on Kava. As it was mentioned earlier one of the core methods in emotional intelligent leadership is building reliable and friendly relations between the members of the team, with the help of empowerment, for example. It won’ be a secret that the members of the team would be from different social layers, nationalities and even races, the core idea of the leader to provide effective task performance and decrease conflict situation. The task we are going to fulfill is really important for the whole island and the team must be reliable. People should understand that we all are doing all the same task and every pair of hands would add to the quick fulfillment of the task.
The first step I suggest to take is to develop a questionnaire that would help to signify the interested companies in the region and attract volunteers, who are ready to help to overcome the problem and develop effective preventive measure, minimizing the after effects. I think that such an action won’t leave the representatives of international companies indifferent and as well as our company they would take an active part in development collaborative program.
The next step would be establishment of the foundation, which will require certain donations from private persona and companies and help to eliminate the after effects of the natural disasters and help those who suffered a lot. It goes without saying that it would make relations between the partners more reliable and friendly as ever active member would play the core role in the establishment of the foundation. I think it would provide good basis for the start of the campaign oriented on the improvement situation.
The next step would be the government institutions’ support. We need official participation and presence of Kava’s government as they could help us to control and effectively prevent the natural and health catastrophes and this would create appropriate situation for business development.
The following steps require development of the activities plan, where each volunteer and representative of governmental and commercial forces would play his/her role.
It goes without saying that to start and fulfill these steps, which would be the start of catastrophes’ prevention campaign, we would need strong and the same time understanding leader. The one who will unite people against the disaster and make them understand the necessity of collaborative struggle against such catastrophe. People are of different nationalities and even races. That is why I am persuaded that emotional intelligence would play the core role in solution of this problem.
