Music in the film
It is important to mention the music in this film, that plays really great role in it. First of all, music makes the atmosphere of the film. Sound effects and music playing made great sense in this film, it helps to make the atmosphere of deep emotional feelings, it focuses on such tones: autumnal, sad, bittersweet, sentimental. Music and sound effects help to make the mood of the film that is “a good cry”. All music creates a mood, that becomes part of the story. In this film the director uses the music to guide the audience, because without special music the emotions of the scenes are not quite clear.
In this film the visual image that we see does not come from the picture, the words of the actors. Instead, most of the important details of the picture actually come from the sound and music. It can be called a “narrative sound”, which narrates the story, helps to tell it.
In this film we can find 5 different kinds of sounds and music. First and the most important is the melody line of the actors voice, which include a pitch, different tones and intonations. The second, is background music, that shows the ever changes in films mood, narration and the scenes by individual rhythms and melodies. The third is a narrative music – a music that actually tells the story as the director sees it. The forth, is sound effects. And the last, there are songs of certain mood that are used in special scenes only to make a stress on them, to show their importance.
So why does the music and sounds are used in this film: because:
– actor’s words do not clearly explain the emotions of a scene;
– the mood of a motion picture comes from the music only;
– music gives the story more details and impact;
– the music explains the emotions that the audience should feel;
– music can even narrate the story. (Steve McVicker)
Editing
For the elements of editing, I will point out shot analysis and some visual effects.
So director Randal Kleiser tried to made a very realistic editing. He uses:
– Long shot in which person usually take sup less than half the height of the frame, it is used to show the setting of a scene;
– Medium shot in which person and surrounding takes practically equal parts, it shows the person’s upeer part of the body;
– Close up shots in which a person takes most of the frame and little of the surroundings is shown, it is used to show a character’s feelings;
– Reaction shot that shows person’s face reacting to an event.
The main attention is paid of course to close up shots, as with their help the director can show actors’ feelings, which take the main place in this film.
As for the visual affects I can name slow motion effect that means that movements on the screen are slower than in real life. This visual effect is always used to focus on the feelings of the actor, and to increase the dramatic effect.
In conclusion I must say that the film “The boy in a plastic bubble” is a lyrical film, so the director and actors tried to reflect the atmosphere as truly as possible.
