Planning is one of the four basic functions of management, which is extremely important for the overall success of the business development. At the same time, it is important to lay emphasis on the fact that management planning is strategically important for the contemporary business environment, when companies need to have a clear but flexible plan of their development to be able to adapt faster to the rapidly changing business environment. The growing competition and the process of globalization force modern companies to focus on management planning as a strategic direction in business development because effective management planning allows companies to maximize the effectiveness and productivity of work of employees and to develop new, more effective approaches to business (Schein, 1999). In this respect, it is possible to refer to the example of successful companies, such as Boeing, which has reached a tremendous success due to the development of their management planning but it is important to understand that the effective management planning may face substantial problems caused by internal conflicts within organizations and by growing pressure from the part of rivals and the public.
On analyzing management planning in such company as Boeing, it is possible to identify major trends and challenges companies may face in the course of management planning today. First of all, it is important to lay emphasis on the fact that Boeing has always paid a lot of attention to management planning. The organization of work of employees within Boeing is grounded on the strict planning. However, in recent years, the company attempts to grant its employees with certain independence, a large autonomy. The latter is done to stimulate employees to develop their initiatives, introduce innovations that can help the company to improve its performance through the implementation of technological innovations and new approaches to management.
Naturally, in such a situation, the role and essence of management planning changes. In actuality, management planning performs a very important function in Boeing. The planning process influences the strategic development of the company because Boeing has its strategic plan which the company attempts to implement at all levels. What is meant here is the fact that all units of the company, all teams and groups working at Boeing are aware of strategic goals the company has to achieve and they do their best to meet these goals respectively to the strategic plan. In fact, each unit within Boeing develops its own plan, which meets the strategic plan of Boeing. As a result, management planning becomes the core of the company performance because all units and employees within the company are oriented on the implementation of plans developed by managers of the company at different levels.
At the same time, today, Boeing develops the strategy of the international market expansion that raises certain challenges, such as cultural barriers that arise when the company enters a new market, where people have a different cultural background. However, environmental concerns are much more important at the moment than the international market expansion and cultural barriers. As the matter of fact, Boeing operates in the aviation industry mainly that means that the public views the company as one of the major contributors to the pollution of the environment. In this respect, it is worth mentioning the fact that greenhouse gas emissions are very dangerous for the environment and aircrafts manufactured by Boeing contribute to such emissions.
As a result, the public opposes to the development of the company, which may be dangerous for the future of people. In such a situation, legislators attempt to introduce strict norms and rules, which regulate the greenhouse gas emissions. For this purpose, legislators develop strict requirements to engines, vehicles and fuel to make them fuel-efficient and, therefore, less dangerous to the environment. However, environmental protection is not only legal but also ethical problem because the company cannot use technologies, which are harmful for the environment, for its own profits (Peters, 2007). In addition, the corporate social responsibility implies the introduction of the higher environmental standards to secure employees and clients from negative effects of the work of the company.
In this respect, it is important to lay emphasis on the fact that there are several factors that affect strategic management, operational, tactical, and contingency planning. At this point it is worth mentioning the environmental concerns of the public, which affect consistently the planning process at all levels because environmental concerns force the company to plan the development of the company in such a way, that it could minimize the negative impact on the environment (Breneman & Taylor, 1996). Second, the social responsibility of the company for its employees is a very important factor because the company is responsible for the well-being of its employees. The company’s planning focuses on the development of approaches that allow to retain employees through the establishment of high standards of social responsibility of Boeing. Third, the situation in international markets affects consistently planning process, especially oil prices and terrorism.
Today, Boeing needs to take into consideration multiple threats which may affect its performance in the future and elaborate effective plans to minimize threats and maximize the effectiveness of its performance.
