It is necessary to discuss in this paper the famous book Critical Chain written by Eliyahu M. Goldratt. This book was written in 1997 and it looks like popular business novel with wise advices how to work and coordinate the activity of own collective in the sphere of project management. In my opinion it is very important to analyze this book in more details and define its main principles that will help to be successful in future work. The main purpose of this paper is to describe the book’s content and dwell our attention on its main characteristics.
Let’s begin our discussion from statistical data analyzing, because it will help us to understand nowadays business situation. Vagueness is considered the one of reasons of project management selection in the separate area of knowledge. As we manage a vagueness in a project (including by risks), straight influences on duration of project, on its successful realization. From data of numerous researches of Standish Group for the traditional methods of project management, only 44% projects are usually completed in time. On the average projects are occupied by a 222% percent from the initially planned duration, 189% from an initial budget. 70% projects abbreviate the initial volume of works of project, 30% projects are closed before the appointed time. According to Eliyahu M. Goldratt it is important to done in time not every task of project, but the whole project, because every task is one of the whole project components. Another valuable asset in the set of tools of Theory of Constraints of the systems is named “The Critical Chain”. This conception gave the name to the book of Goldratt (Critical Chain, Goldratt, 1997). It gives the effective method of planning of operating under projects due to more adequate account of arising up in them vagueness and permissions of problem the competition of project tasks for resources.
A method of Critical Chain is an appendix to the separately taken project of those principles which the method of DBR uses in a cyclic production. The result of application of the calendar planning and allocation of resources on the method of Critical Chain is more high probability of completion of project in time, and on occasion, real reduction of duration of project. Method of Critical Chain, initially used for a management the separately taken projects, on the basis of conception of “Drum” was later widespread for the decision of tasks management the aggregate of projects (multi project environment), realized the general pool of resources.
