BACKGROUND

Fetal alcohol syndrome is a leading cause of mental retardation. Pregnant women who drink risk damage to the developing fetus from the toxic effects of alcohol in the bloodstream. Retardation ranges from mild to severe depending on the amount of alcohol consumed. Physical deformities can also occur.
