Review on the article

“Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Evidence-Based Practice: Use of the Ventilator Bundle to Prevent” by Arlene F. Tolentino-DelosReyes, Susan D. Ruppert and Shyang-Yun Pamela K. Shiao
The article is a research of the use of Ventilator Bundle with critically ill patients and in patients receiving mechanical ventilation. There is a practice of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia, and the authors speak about The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) instructions to prevent or reduce these accidents. (p. 21)
“The purpose of the study was to examine nurses’ knowledge about the use of the ventilator bundle to prevent VAP”. (p.21)
So the authors present research “Current evidence on the prevention of VAP, with respect to HOB elevation, hand washing, and oral care” that shows close connection between HOB elevation to 30º to 45º and a reduced incidence of VAP.( (Arlene F.,22)
Also the article shows a research of “the barriers to using
HOB elevation as a method of preventing VAP, and examined the connection between VAP, days of mechanical ventilation, and ICU days”.
The incidence of VAP can be reduced by preventive measures, like mentioned in the article hand-washing with special antiseptics. It is important to mention special studies about hand-washing practices, that compare bacterial counts before and after washing with: an alcohol-based solution and with chlorhexidine. Together with hand-washing factor, oral aspiration is also considered to be a factor that contributes to VAP accidents. Such practices showed some level of professional knowledge and skills among the nurses about proper hand washing after contact with patients.
Speaking about the methods of researches, mentioned in the article, an important clinical project should be pointed out. It was conducted to find out nurses’ knowledge about use of the ventilator bundle at a large hospital before and after education sessions.
The results showed: “range of ages, educational levels, years of experience in critical care, and total hospital experience of nurses; nurses’ scores before and after education sessions were compared, and the changes were evident – test scores indicate increase in the knowledge of the nurses about VAP and the ventilator bundle. (“Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Evidence-Based Practice: Use of the Ventilator Bundle to Prevent”, 25)
So the goals of the project were successful: it shows a significant improvement in the nurses’ results of knowledge and skills about the level of care recommended with the ventilator bundle.
So, the article outlines the importance of education sessions with nurses about the ventilator bundle and its use to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia, as it has a significant effect on nurses’ knowledge and clinical practice. (“Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Evidence-Based Practice: Use of the Ventilator Bundle to Prevent”,26)
The article provides all necessary data of the researches and methods of their performance. The conclusion was made that the number of incidence of VAP can be reduced by preventive measures, mentioned in the article.
