BACKGROUND
The topic of single-sex schools has become a controversial issue in education. Coeducational programs are consistent with the spirit of democracy and equal opportunity supported by the United States; however, as recent studies have indicated, women may be short-changed in traditional classrooms and do better academically and emotionally in a single-sex environment. Other research done with African-American boys in urban elementary schools suggests that they, too, develop higher levels of self-esteem in a single-gender situation.
