Congratulatory letters

These letters are hard and easy to write. They’re easy because they’re short and so specific that you won’t have to struggle for words. They’re hard because you must make every message fresh yet may be tempted to use clichés.

Introductory sentence : Congratulate the reader for a specific achievement.
Next two or three sentences : For personal achievements such as a wedding or birth, elaborate on the specific event. For professional achievements such as promotions, state why the reader is deserving.

Closing : If you use one, restate your best wishes.

Dear Laura, I was so happy to hear about your promotion to Executive Vice President of Communications. Your background as a writer, as well as your legendary people skills, guarantee you’ll do an excellent job. I look forward to hearing great things about you and, of course, to seeing you at those “marathon meetings.” Sincerely,
