BACKGROUND

After publishing The Outsiders at the age of seventeen, S. E. (Susan Eloise) Hinton went on to write four other realistic novels about teenagers and the serious problems they deal with such as abortion, drug abuse, death, and divorce. Her books continue to be popular among teenage readers.
